Finally! A Few New Handmade Felted Creations to Share - Summer Nuno Scarves
I feel like it has been a very long time since I've shared any felted creations with you that weren't baby or nursery related. Over the weekend, I decided to use some of the silk in my stash to create summer style scarves. These were created through nuno, or laminated, felting where I joined wool to a silk base. Essentially, the scarves are just two thin layers which allows them to still be durable, but also super soft and very lightweight. That is why I call them summer scarves because they really could be worn in summer or any season for that matter. Please check out the photos below to see how my summer scarves turned out.

I created this scarf as a gift for my boss. Next week is my last day at work. I'm happy to be leaving my teaching position to be staying home with the baby soon, but I will miss having classes and instructing students in design. My boss is a wonderful lady that has treated me very well over the last few years that I've worked at my position. I thought that a neutral charcoal gray and white scarf would make a nice gift for her. I hope she likes it!

This scarf was fun to make! I created the scarf itself through nuno felting with BFL wool, silk gauze, and some linen flax. I then hand dyed the scarf through shibori techniques to create the striping. I am really enjoying the dye process and am already in the process of creating some more multi-colored scarves. I have yet to decide if I will keep this scarf for myself or gift it or sell it.

Some New Nuno Felted Scarves and Wet Felted Flowers
This is another one of those "I just had to share" moments. Last week, I made a post about dyeing silk chiffon scarves. Over the last week, I was actually able to get some felting done and made a few of those hand dyed scarves into nuno felted, or laminated, scarves using some super soft, fine quality merino wool. I also made matching wet felted flower pins to go along with the scarves. I plan to eventually list these sets in my Etsy shop so be on the lookout. I think that they'd be especially nice for holiday gifts.

Looks like a watercolor paiting and little candy rolls to me - my recent nuno felted scarf creations
Nuno felting, or laminated felt, is the combining of silk or another fabric and wool. This is a new technique for me, although it has been around for years. I have a slightly different method for it than the one provided in the link above, but there are usually several roads to the same result when it comes to feltmaking or any other fiber art. You eventually just make a technique your own by developing your own style and the process of creation to achieve good results.
I didn't think that I would enjoy nuno felting so very much, but I really do! I had hesitated to try it since I had many other felting projects going on. I am very glad that I decided to branch out though and plan to develop more nuno felted pieces over time. As you can see, I'm already putting it to good use for some scarves in my Fall line of fashion accessories.
If you'd like to learn more about the process of nuno felting or laminated felt, here are a few instructional links to explore:

You can also just do an internet search for "nuno felting" or "laminated felt" to find many more resources on the web.
