New Style of Handmade Nuno Felted Wool and Silk Scarves - The Lightning Series
This is my latest style of nuno felted scarf. I call it the "Lightning" series of scarves because of the white linen fibers randomly scattered over the surface. Each one of these is created individually through nuno felting techniques where wool is combined with a silk base. Then I hand dye them to get the richest colors possible. These particular scarves will eventually be going to Eclectics Gallery here in Kansas City. If you live in the area, please stop by in a few weeks to see them in person. The photos don't quite do them justice because you can't feel how super soft and lightweight they are.

Handmade Nuno Felted Scarves with Shibori Dyeing Techniques

Download Free Printables Now
It has been a while since I posted last. I just wanted to share some of my latest felted creations. Since I have a lot of aches and pains at this point in my pregnancy, I'm trying to continue creating without overdoing it. This means that I've been doing a lot less physically intensive activities like hand dyeing. I have really enjoyed experimenting with dye methods including the shibori technique that you see in the photos above. I did also hand felt the scarves which isn't exactly a sedentary process, but the yearning to create is overwhelming so I continue to do so - just less of it! I hope that you enjoy the scarf photos. I have a few more in the works to share at a later date.

Nuno Felting - A Before and After Sneak Peak at the Technique from Raw Wool and Silk to Finished Scarves
I rarely snap photos while I'm working on a felted piece, but I took a minute to snap a photo of some of my latest nuno felted scarves while I was in the process of creating them. I thought that my blog readers might be interested to see the before and after photos. The first photo is of the layers of wool and silk chiffon prior to being wet felted. You can see the loose wool fibers laying on top of the silk chiffon with some of the fabric showing through in places. There is also another layer of wool on the bottom of the silk chiffon which you can't see. The silk is sandwiched between the two layers of wool roving. The second photo is obviously the finished results after wet felting and drying. You can see that the colors changed a bit during the feltmaking process because of the merging of the colored wool into a different colored silk base and because of some bleeding and mixing of the dyes. (Also, the lighting isn't the best in my before photo which affected the colors too!)These scarves are actually shorty style scarflettes. You'll also notice that they don't have the ruffle edging of some of my previous nuno felted scarves. I will be listing the new style scarflettes for sale in my Etsy shop this week. You can see more photos of these and my other nuno felted scarves on my flickr photo gallery. And, stay tuned to my blog because I'll be announcing a super special contest giveaway for one of my nuno felted scarves that will be hosted by the Felting Blog at CraftGossip. You'll have a chance to win a fabulously free scarflette!

I just wanted to give a shout out and big thanks to Jenn of Windrose Fiber Studio for writing a magnificent blog post on my nuno felted scarves. It was part of a series of articles on her blog about nuno felting. If you are into fiber arts, Jenn's blog and Etsy shop are a must see. She has wonderfully informative posts about all things fiber and great fiber supplies and finished items for sale too. Now go take a peak at both . . .
