Handmade spun wool yarn examples

Are You a Handmade Yarn Spinner?

my tales of spinning wool and a look at my spun tidbits

hand spun yarn by the funky felter

There was a time that I loved to practice with my drop spindle to make tidbits of yarn. I did it in the house and even on-the-go during car rides. My efforts usually only produced mini skeins. Those little strips like in the photo above were used in my wet felted wool hats & scarves. I never had ambitions to be a hardcore producer of large amounts of wool yarn - more just liked to play around with a drop spindle and kick spindle. I even took a class on using a spinning wheel and produced one skein of "interesting" yarn that I still have.

I longed for my own entry level spinning wheel for a long time after that, but ended up changing jobs, moving to another city, and well, forgetting about it all for a long time. Now that I'm physically back home and mentally back home too, it might be time to start spinning again....goodness knows I have more than enough wool roving for it! There's something both challenging and soothing about using a spindle or spinning wheel - followed by the satisfaction of making something with your hands. I love the whole process.

Do you spin your own yarns? Please share some links or inspiration in the comments :)

  1. I would love to have a spinning wheel and make my own yarn, but the odds are that will happen in another lifetime :)
Love the picture of your spun tidbits!

    1. I know how you feel... I still would love to have one of my own, maybe someday. I always seem to hang on to that hope. For now, I will have to be satisfied with my drop spindles :-) And, thanks for the kind words about my yarn photo!
