I just love Amy Butler's Duck Egg Fabric and my new handmade Coin Purse

I normally do not obsess over fabric.  After all, my sewing skills are quite minimal (and I do mean quite minimal!).  For whatever reason though, I just love Amy Butler's French Wallpaper Duck Egg Fabric.  I don't know if it is the bold color combination of reds and blues or the pattern or perhaps both, but I have been a bit consumed by its loveliness lately.  I got this gorgeous handmade coin purse in the mail today from SeventhSphere on Etsy.  It is now officially one of my favorite things!  It is also of awesome quality, thickly lined, and, well, just splendid.

Now you know that my obsessions do not only include things of wool and felt.  I have momentarily branched out.  Unfortunately, I think this particular duck egg fabric is now out of print.  Although, I try not to think about that devastating news and focus on my new little jewel of a coin purse.

In the Dye Pot with my New Eco-Friendly Acid Dyes = Fabulous Colored Hand Dyed Wool Roving

Yesterday and today, I have been dyeing wool.  I'm very pleased with all the colors!  I've dyed over five pounds of wool with my new acid dyes from Greener Shades and am very, very happy with the results.  With a baby girl to care for, I sought out a new kind of dye that would be friendlier to use at home as well as better for the environment.  I've used many kinds of dyes over the past several years, and I must say that Greener Shades does as well if not better than all the other professional acid dyes that I've used.  It is eco-friendly, non-hazardous, heavy metal free and can do impressively well at dyeing on top of all that.  I think that I might have found a new professional acid dye to use long-term on my wool and silk.

These gorgeous colors of wool will eventually be carded into batts for felting and spinning.  The next thing on my list is to purchase a drum carder in the very, very near future, but that is for another post!  Stay tuned...

(And, if you'd like to see a close up of my colored wool, just click on the individual photos above to see any one of them full-size.)

A Frilly Style Nuno Felted Scarf with More to Come

I just wanted to drop a line or two and share this purple frilly style nuno felted scarf.  It too will eventually be for sale at Eclectics Gallery here in Kansas City.  I'm also making some similar ones in different color schemes to go with it to the shop.  These scarves are a combination of silk and wool with the occasional odd fiber like soy silk or linen added in for texture.  I also hand dye the silk in most cases and really enjoy the entire process of making these.  I'm trying to give myself a deadline of one more week to get all my little felted goodies finished to take down to Eclectics.  Now I'm off because I need to get busy!  I have no problem getting things started, but with a little baby in the house, it is a lot harder to get things finished now.  Although, I don't mind because she's worth every minute of my time.

Fascinating Handmade Needle Felted Critters! Some New-to-Me Fiber Artists that are Talented with a Felting Needle and some Wool!

I was recently browsing flickr for needle felted wool critters when I came across a few fiber artists who are very talented with felting needles. I just wanted to share my discoveries with you. Please check out their sites, blogs, shops, etc. It is worth your time!

Nina (featherheart on Etsy) makes the most extraordinary dragons! Her other fantasy creatures and animals are also wonderfully made. The bright color combinations and structural details are really amazing. Please check out her main website as well as her flickr photos.

AusieFelts (aussiefelts on Etsy) makes the most adorable little critters! Her koala makes me want to give it a big hug. She also creates the cutest bears, bunnies, lions, cats, and more. Each animal seems to have a personality and life of its own. And, did I mention how amazingly cute they are? Please visit her blog, her website, and her flickr photos.

Finally, there's this image of a needle felted bull terrier by hel62 on flickr. I couldn't find any other links to a website or blog for it, but I just had to share it with you. It is one of the most amazingly realistic needle felted creatures that I've ever seen! I actually thought it was a real dog when I first saw it. Please look at hel62's flickr photos to see the cutie pie dog that the needle felted model is based on.

Come see me and my handmade felted goodies at the No Coast Craft-o-rama this weekend in Minneapolis! Shop, browse, and buy!

If you live in the Minneapolis area or just happen to be there this weekend, don't miss out on the No Coast Craft-o-rama. It is an extravaganza of top notch handmade arts and crafts. I will be a vendor this year, and I'm thrilled about it! I'll be selling a wide range of my felted goodies from hats to scarves to wrist cuffs to needle felted jewelry to brooches to wallets to . . . and the list goes on and on. I'll literally have hundreds of items displayed for sale. Some of them you can see in the photo above, and there are some brand new items that are not listed in my Etsy shop too. Besides my felted goodies, there will also be dozens of other vendors with handmade items from soaps to screen prints to jewelry to . . . well, the list goes on and on.

I will be in booth number C-4 (right by an entrance area). If you plan to go, please look me up on the vendor map and stop by. I'd love to meet you! Be sure to introduce yourself and let me know that you read my blog. And, as far as my blog goes, this will probably be the last post that I make until early next week because I am knee deep in handmade felted goodies in preparation for the big event. I will also be putting my Etsy shop in vacation mode later today or tomorrow until sometime early next week. If you've had your eye on anything there, I'd suggest that you snatch it up now. With over 10,000 visitors expected at the two day show, I don't know what I'll have left when I return (hopefully not much!). You can find more info about the No Coast Craft-o-rama below or visit the website for complete details. I sincerely hope to see you there!

When: Friday, December 5, from 3 PM to 8PM and Saturday, December 6 from 9 AM to 5 PM
Where: Midtown Global Market on Lake Street in Minneapolis

Who: Anyone and Everyone who loves crafty and artsy things! (It is a great place for Christmas and Holiday gift shopping!)

Are you buying or making handmade for the Holidays? Super special handcrafted Holiday gifts are the best!

Since October has arrived and Halloween is right around the corner, soon followed by Thanksgiving, I have finally started to think about Holiday gifts for this year.  I bought almost all handmade presents for last year's Christmas.  Honestly, I got mixed reviews from my extended family, but I think it is because they are accustom to getting commercialized products as gifts.  This year, I plan to stick to my pledge to buy handmade though.  Except for a few items, I plan to buy mainly handmade presents or make presents myself.

One thing that I've done to encourage others to do the same is to make a Holiday Shopping Guide on my main website.  It features a wide variety of top quality handcrafted items from artists and crafters worldwide.  There are only 56 participating Etsy sellers to hopefully make it easier to browse through their fabulous shops.  Please click on over and take a peak at the featured shops and sites.  I am really pleased with the diverse and unique products that are showcased there, and I'm also pleased with how the overall guide turned out.

Now, my question to you is . . .
Are you buying or making handmade gifts for the Holidays?
And, have you already begun your quest to buy or make Holiday presents?
Please do share in the comments . . . I'd love to know!

Artists and Crafters Guide to Preparing for the Holiday Shopping Season: Handmade Sellers Getting Ready for a Rush of Buyers! Its about that time!

"Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the . . ." Wait a minute! Does it seem a little too early to be singing a Holiday song. Considering that the weather where I live is still frightfully hot, I'd say "YES!" - but if you're the owner of a small arts and crafts business, you know that it is prime time to start preparing for the Holiday selling season. If you haven't already been hurriedly creating new things and getting ready for those Holiday shoppers, then you should be. It is not too late though! Below you'll find a few of my personal tips on how to get ready for a (hopefully) big Holiday rush of shoppers.

Ready, Get Set, GO!

1. Spiffy up Your Etsy Shop and Other Online Venues
Make sure that your overall shop is looking its very best! If you need to, invest in a new banner and avatar for your Etsy shop. Check out my previous article post to find some free banners. And, let your product photos speak for themselves and be at their absolute best because that is going to be your potential buyer's first impression. Also, be sure to have clearly defined shop policies and a nice, friendly profile. It is all those little details that add up to make your shop be as professional and welcoming as possible.

2. Stock Your Shop! And have more inventory on hand . . .
Because you just never know! Not only do you not know how many potential sales you might make, but you also don't know what kind of Holiday busyness will get in the way so that you don't have time to create new things. Stocking your shop and preparing item photos and descriptions early will make it easy to list new items when you're busy with other things this Fall/Winter. Now is the time to stock your online shop as well as stash some inventory away. Personally, I like to have 100+ items listed in my Etsy shop and some waiting in the wings to replace those that sell. It may seem like a lot to some, but the more items that you have, the more chances there are for you to be found in the pile of listings that are added each day on Etsy.

3. Organize Your Shipping and Packaging
This is perhaps what caught me by surprise last year, but this year, I'm going to be prepared! If you print your labels via PayPal and use Priority Mail boxes and envelopes provided by the US Post Office, that can make things a bit easier when it comes to mailing. Also, if you are a large volume seller (or a small one who doesn't like hassle), you might consider paying for a mail service like Endicia or Stamps, but I've heard mixed reviews about both of them so do a little research before you invest in such a service. Personally, I'm an old-fashioned girl when it comes to mailing. I like to print my own return address labels and write or print my shipping labels too. I also trek down to the local post office (yes, in person) and mail off my orders. Since I am so hands on about it all, I try to keep my packing/shipping area organized. I print several return labels at once to have on hand as well as keep my mailing envelopes and boxes in open face plastic bins for easy access. I also have my jewelry boxes, organza bags, and pretty gift wrapping supplies in similar easy access bins. I just finished ordering some mailers from my current favorite place to buy, Upaknship. You can also find good packaging supply deals on Ebay - yep, you heard me right - Ebay! And, don't forget to recycle! I always recycle whatever packing supplies that I can. It is an all-around good thing when you recycle!

4. Advertise, Market, and Publicize! Get the word out people!
Buy some online and print advertising on blogs/sites and in magazines that pertain to your target market. Also indie shopping guides are a great thing to take part in to boost your exposure. You can find good advertising space in all price ranges. Read more about all of this in my Online Advertising post. Also, tell your friends, family, and coworkers about your shop, and tell them to tell others! If you don't already, post in forums regularly as well as keep up with your social networking sites because there will be a lot more people trolling the internet for presents this Fall/Winter. There are many, many ways to promote so take advantage of every avenue that is available to you!

5. Pursue off-line selling too! Craft fairs and local events!
I must admit that I'm so much more comfortable sitting in my pj's and selling online from the luxuries of my own home, but it does pay to get out and do some fairs, festivals, and events. Often times, I have seen sellers make more at one show than they would make in a month or more selling online - especially during Holiday shopping season. It is not too late to seek out local venues in your area. Try checking these sites to see what's going on in your area: Festival Network and Craft Lister. And, even if you aren't planning on selling at a local event, visit a few to buy your own Holiday gifts and support local area artists and crafters.

Finally, I just want to remind you to continue to create and do things as usual - don't get lost in all the hubbub of the Holiday selling season. After all, hopefully you have a shop and sell your creations because you love what you make first, then the sales and money that come along with it.

Great Reasons to shop locally and buy handmade . . .

I thought that I'd share a portion of my notes from yesterday's "Shop Local" workshop on Etsy. These are some great reasons from Etsy Administration to shop locally and buy handmade. They are written in my own words.

Reasons to shop local from independent artists/crafters:

1. Independent artists/crafters are more likely to invest money earned locally back into their own communities.

2. Buying locally from independent artists/crafters has been proven to cause less waste and depletion of natural resources.

3. Local independent artists/crafters offer more innovative products and are usually willing to go the extra mile to please customers.

4. Local independent artists/crafters are much more knowledgeable about their
products than a chain store would be since the artist/crafter creates it themselves. They understand the process and what goes into each item produced.

5. Supporting local independent artists/crafters through buying locally provides a source of income so that individuals and families can better their lives and financial situations.

6. Successful local independent artists/crafters are an inspiration to those in their community as a whole and other fellow artists/crafters.

7. Buying locally from independent artists/crafters can only help flourish a community overall.

Etsy now has a great new search feature to help you find local artists/crafters to buy from called Shop Local. You can see an example of its search results for Kansas City, MO, in the image at the top of the post. It allow you to search for local Etsy sellers from any city or town in the world! Now go try it out!

Buy Handmade this Holiday Season! Indie shopping at its best! A Guide for your Gifting!

There's a movement that has started to buy handmade for the Holidays. It is a terrific idea that benefits both the maker and the recipient. Not only are you supporting a hard working artist or crafter, but you are also providing a gift that has meaning and was made with skill and great care. I personally encourage you to buy something handmade for your loved ones, coworkers, neighbors, whoever, this Holiday season.

So where do you begin?
First you can sign the online Pledge at BuyHandmade.org - "I pledge to buy handmade this holiday season, and request that others do the same for me." Commit to buying your gifts from artists and crafters who put time, love, and care into what they make.

I Took The Handmade Pledge! BuyHandmade.org

Next you can pass along your new philosophy to all your friends and family. Be sure to let them know that you are supporting the "Buy Handmade" movement and that you request they do the same for you and others this Holiday season. Sometimes all that it takes is giving someone else that knowledge. For many people, who are use to the same holiday rush in department stores, they may not have even thought of simplifying their lives by focusing on buying handmade for the Holidays. Giving a handmade gift for the Holidays is meaningful to both the maker and the recipient.

And finally, START SHOPPING! So where do you go and what do you do to find handmade? Just check out the list below for some helpful hints on places to find unique, quality handcrafted gifts.
