Handmade Felted Play Hat with a Flower Theme
In the midst of everything, I have found some time to do a little feltmaking! Hoorah! I recently went to a local felting guild meeting (my first one) and really enjoyed myself. They pick a theme for each month. Then they share their needle or wet felted creations with one another at the next month's meeting. September's theme is flowers. I was very happy to have a focus for my felting. I think it has helped me to find time to create things again and given me a little inspiration. In the photo above you can see my handmade felted wool hat being worn by my lovely daughter, Rowynn, while she plays with a bin of my needle felted flowers, hearts, geodes, and other beads. The hat is a bit big on her and a bit snug on me so I have deemed it a play hat, and she loves to wear it around the house. It has a flower on top and pointy cut out petals that make the hat itself a flower of sorts. It is all corriedale wool. I made it through a combination of needle felting and wet felting. Although I don't have as much freedom in the variety of shape of my hats with needle felting the bases, I have found that it is easier time-wise for me to needle felt first, and then wet felt the hats to finish them out. I did come across this wonderful pointy needle felted hat form though and want to purchase it soon. My existing foam hat forms are ones that I've crafted from combining a pillow bolster and foam pad. They work just fine, but I'd like to have some more variety. Below are some photos of the process and some more of Rowynn in the hat. I've also made an alpaca/wool mix hat that I've yet to embellish and photograph so hopefully I can get that finished and share it soon.

A Critter called Hazel: another felted wool creation for the baby's nursery!
Earlier this week, I finished another little creation for the baby's room. It has been a work in progress even before I became pregnant. With a baby on the way soon, I felt like it would make a good addition to the nursery so I took the time to put the finishing touches on my critter creation. I call her "Hazel" - she just looked like a "Hazel" to me! Her interior is made of foam that I wet felted around. Her exterior is a combination of the wet felted wool base and needle felted surface design. I also needle felted the tail, ears, and eyes. No sewing was involved which is just the way that I like it because I can not sew very well. Since she doesn't really resemble any known animal, I just affectionately call her a critter. She was made with lots of love for the baby to come. I hope that you enjoy the photos and have a good weekend!

Fascinating Handmade Needle Felted Critters! Some New-to-Me Fiber Artists that are Talented with a Felting Needle and some Wool!
I was recently browsing flickr for needle felted wool critters when I came across a few fiber artists who are very talented with felting needles. I just wanted to share my discoveries with you. Please check out their sites, blogs, shops, etc. It is worth your time!
Nina (featherheart on Etsy) makes the most extraordinary dragons! Her other fantasy creatures and animals are also wonderfully made. The bright color combinations and structural details are really amazing. Please check out her main website as well as her flickr photos.
AusieFelts (aussiefelts on Etsy) makes the most adorable little critters! Her koala makes me want to give it a big hug. She also creates the cutest bears, bunnies, lions, cats, and more. Each animal seems to have a personality and life of its own. And, did I mention how amazingly cute they are? Please visit her blog, her website, and her flickr photos.
Finally, there's this image of a needle felted bull terrier by hel62 on flickr. I couldn't find any other links to a website or blog for it, but I just had to share it with you. It is one of the most amazingly realistic needle felted creatures that I've ever seen! I actually thought it was a real dog when I first saw it. Please look at hel62's flickr photos to see the cutie pie dog that the needle felted model is based on.

Yay! My needle felted flower pendants have been featured on Cuteable!
I got a little email yesterday from Lynsey at Cuteable. It was letting me know that my needle felted flower pendants were being featured in a post. I am honored and thrilled! Thanks so much to Lynsey! If you regularly stop by my blog, you've probably seen me post a few times by now about one of my felted goodies being featured somewhere. You may be wondering how to get your lovely handcrafted items noticed and featured. There's a great article over at Modish about contacting blogs to submit your work. It is a must read in my opinion and is very well written. That is actually where I got the idea to get in touch with Cuteable about my felted goodies, and they responded which in turn became a feature for my needle felted flower pendants.
If you are trying to grow your hobby into a business or just want more sales, it is vital to get your name out there for the recognition and free exposure. This means that you may need to take the initiative and spread the word yourself so don't be shy! Go ahead - send out a polite email or two and let others know about your quality handcrafted items. The worst that can happen is no response at all which is where you started anyway. And, not all of my features have been through contacting blogs and sites. Most of them come from those blogs and sites finding me first, but this is because I have a strong online presence and good product to offer. Essentially, it is a big marketing circle. Don't be afraid to reach out to site and blogs, but also do your best to have a good brand and online presence for them to find you too.

My Handmade Needle Felted Heart Rings made it to Etsy's Front Page Today! Yippeeeeee!
It is not often enough that one of my items makes it to Etsy's front page, but it happened this morning with my needle felted heart rings. I always find that my item views and shop hearts get a big boost when this happens, and I make some sales occasionally too which is so nice! My item was only on the front page for a short while today though. Yet even with that, I gained almost 20 new hearts for my shop. I have found that my needle felted pendants and rings are selling quite well and getting noticed more often than some of my other items. Probably because they make wonderful, inexpensive holiday gifts and stocking stuffers. They are also available in 15 customizable colors. You can find those and many other "giftable" items in my Etsy shop.

Yay! My orange needle felted heart pendant made it to Etsy's front page last night!

I just wanted to share my latest bit of publicity - my orange needle felted heart pendant was in a treasury that made it to the front page of Etsy. It was a really lovely treasury by Beyondtheseadeniz. It had several other felted items included, and the predominant color was orange - my favorite! I got over 20 new hearts and woke up to 3 sold items this morning! Yay! It had been a while since something of mine made it to Etsy's front page. It is such great exposure when it happens, but with so many wonderful items and treasuries to choose from, it happens to me very seldom. I am very thankful for my little bit of fame last night. It is such a wonderful thing to spot your own item on the front page.

Want a flower that is always in bloom? Try these brightly colored needle felted flower rings, pendants, and hair pins!
These flowers are always in bloom for Spring & Summer! They can also be customized from your choice of 15 colors. Each little flower is bright, fun, and a bit funky too. They're also surprisingly durable and lightweight due to their solid needle felted wool base. I create each one individually according the the buyer's color requests.
If you combine a matching ring, pendant, and hair pin like in the second photo, you can have a small wearable garden of forever blooming flowers. I have found that these are also great gifts for teens and tweens when done in their school mascot colors. They are also wonderful wedding favor gifts for your flower girls when done in the wedding colors. And, of course, as with all my other felted jewelry, they are ideal for the young at heart!
You can find several custom custom color listings for flower rings, pendants, and hair pins in the flowers section of my Etsy shop. There's also more images of them in my flickr photos.

Chickadees and Bunnies if you please! My latest needle felted wool pendants!
This chicky and bunny are the latest little additions to my line of needle felted wool pendants. They're super soft, lightweight, and a bit fuzzy too! I will be adding a couple more colors of bunnies next week so check the animals section of my Etsy shop for new listings. You can also find more photos of these on my flickr photo gallery.
I think that these cuties are ideal for Spring and Easter. What a nice handcrafted accessory for the kid in your life or the adult who is a kid at heart.
