Handmade Crocheted Snowman Patterns

Meet My Autumn Snowman Sisters!

handmade crochet snowman with FREE pattern

free crochet snowman patterns by the funky felter

Yesterday I posted about how to easily sculpt carrot noses and button eyes from polymer clay. And prior to that, I had posted about accidentally stuffing many of my crocheted snowmen wrong side out. Ooops! Well, I decided to get past all that and just decorate my little army of snowmen and have fun with it.

This set of "sisters" is part of my snowman army that I decided to decorate with cuts of old felted sweaters. I've had a couple bags full of felted wool sweaters for, well, probably years now. I've used bits and pieces of them over the years on different projects. This orange felted wool screamed to me Autumn so I stitched up some simple cone hats and cut strips for scarves. Dressing up these ladies was as much fun as originally crocheting them. Now I have to decide whether to keep them for myself or make them a handmade gift for someone else.

Would you like to make some snowman "sisters" of your own? I used this easy amigurumi snowman pattern by Red Heart for the taller 3-tiered snowman and adapted it slightly. My adaptations included using a magic ring for the beginning and adding a couple of rounds to the bottom ball. I also used cotton yarn and a size G/6 (4mm) hook instead of what's recommended on the crochet pattern. You could use the original pattern as-is and get great results. I personally like to experiment and create new versions - gives each snowman a personality!

For the shorter snowman "sister", I adapted the pattern quite a lot more and made something brand new - a bit too much to explain in a sentence or two so I'm outlining the new crochet pattern below - absolutely free for you to give it a try!

SHORT CROCHETED SNOWMAN PATTERN:
Crochet materials needed:
Size G/6 hook
White cotton yarn
Scissors & Polyfill (or comparable stuffing)

Note: Work in continuous rounds throughout the pattern. I recommend using a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round for tracking them as you go more easily.

Make a magic ring, 6 sc into ring and pull tight.
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each st. around (12 sts.)
Rnd 2: [sc in next st., 2 sc in next st.] around (18 sts.)
Rnds 3-7: sc in each st. around (18 sts.)
Rnd 8: sc2tog around (decrease to 9 sts.)
Rnd 9: 2 sc in each st. around (increase to 18 sts. to start the body)
Rnd 10: [sc in next 2 sts., 2 sc in next st.] around (24 sts.)
Rnd 11-17: sc in each st. around (24 sts.)
Note: At this point, I recommend you flip the snowman right side out if you prefer it that way. I left mine wrong side out. Then stuff it with polyfill before starting the decreases in the next rows. Also, if it becomes difficult to decrease down to the 3 sts. in Rnd 20, you can stop in the previous Rnd, tighten and tie off. I like to decrease as far as possible personally, but do what works for you!
Rnd 18: sc2tog around (decrease to 12 sts.)
Rnd 19: sc2tog around (decrease to 6 sts.)
Rnd 20: sc2tog around (decrease to 3 sts.)
Tie off and weave in ends.

Burlap and Scarecrow Handmade Fall Wreath

Handmade Burlap and Scarecrow Autumn Wreath

make this pretty wreath on a budget using a pool noodle and stuff from your craft stash

burlap and scarecrow orange wreath for autumn by the funky felter

We recently held a fun-filled afternoon craft fellowship at my church. Several ladies gathered together to learn how to make a wreath base from a pool noodle and then cover it in burlap. The wreath above was one that I started that day, but got so busy talking and helping others that I didn't finish it until a week or so later at home.

For the base, you can use my craft tutorial on how to make 2 wreath bases from 1 pool noodle or you can make just 1 base from the smaller size pool noodles. That's the method I used for the wreath above since I got an incredible deal on a case of the small pool noodles. Essentially you just cut the pool noodle ends at opposite angles and duct tape them together for a smooth, round circle. It is a 3 minute job for a wreath base that costs a buck or less if you shop savvy for your pool noodle.

Then I covered the newly made base in burlap ribbon and used my trusty hot glue gun to apply embellishments that I already had in my craft stash. I love the local dollar store or surplus store for collecting inexpensive ribbon and holiday themed items. You can also scavenge outdoors for pine cones and acorns.

Quick and Easy Felt Flower Tutorial

Sew or Hot Glue these Pretty Felt Flowers

Use just one 25 cent craft felt sheet per flower!

quick and easy felt flowers craft tutorial for just 25 cents per flower

If you missed my original craft tutorial on these cheap, quick and easy felt flowers, click on the link below for full photo instructions. I have been using them all Fall season to decorate indoors and outdoors. Check out the Autumn themed wreath I made with them for my porch for a little inspiration.

Each flower is created with just one sheet of 25 cent craft felt and either hot glued or sewn together. You can make at least a half dozen in an hour - probably more if you work quickly! I like to make several colored flowers ahead of time and store them in a gallon bag for later craft projects.

If you've made anything with this style or other felt flowers, please share your post link or photo in the comments. I'd love to see what you've been up to!

Ecclesiastes 3:1 Bible Verse Fall Photo

Hope you are enjoying Autumn!

ecclesiastes 3 bible verse about seasons with photo by the funky felter

Ecclesiastes 3:1

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.

Here's another photo from a vacation my husband and I took several years ago to Minnesota. I believe this photo was taken on the rocky shores of Lake Superior near Duluth. We had such a wonderful time on that road trip. I hope to go back again someday in the Fall season. It is beautiful there. Happy Fall!

Just a little freebie today! I made this Autumn owl pattern to use in some applique projects. It works well for that purpose, but you could also use it for other crafts such as a painting stencil or an outline for paper crafting. When making my fabric appliques seen in the photo above, I used an iron-on fabric adhesive.

Fall Fellowship Craft Party

Church Craft Party for Autumn

Fall wreath making for local ladies' fellowship & friendship!

fall wreaths created at a church craft party and ladies fellowship

So if you have been keeping up with my blog posts, you've probably caught on that I'm a bit obsessed with wreath making. From making pool noodle bases to covering them in burlap for Autumn, I have been a busy beaver creating wreath after wreath along with many other Fall decorations. I share these projects here on my blog, but I often times share them on my personal Facebook account too. That's where I usually put my first in-process photos to for close friends - old college buddies, church friends and others I personally know.

Recently I happened to mention how fun it would be to do a wreath-making party when posting some in-process craft photos there. To my surprise, there was quite a bit of interest, and just this past weekend, myself and the ladies at my church organized a super neat fellowship craft party to make Fall themed wreaths from pool noodle bases. Check out the fruits of our (very fun!) labor in the photo above.

The church ladies enjoyed it so much that we are all planning a monthly get-together craft party with different themes each time. Our craft parties are open to all making it a fun way to connect with local ladies. I'm really looking forward to making things, but moreover, I'm looking forward to making friends and getting to know people in my church and community better.

Have you ever done a craft party at church or with your community? How did it go and what did you make?

How to Needle Felt an Owl Craft Tutorial

Fall Owl Needle Felting Craft Tutorial

an easy fiber craft for beginners using cookie cutters, wool roving & felting needles

how to needle felt a fall owl using cookie cutters

As a long-time fiber crafter, I started out wet felting and later learned to needle felt. Cookie cutters were part of my first experiences with felting needles. I've used them often over the years as a guide for molding the wool. This felt craft tutorial involves various size and shapes of cookie cutters for the little owl above. It is easy for beginners but good for all stages of learners' skills. This is also a great way to introduce older kids to the craft of needle felting - just be sure there is adult supervision as those needles are very sharp!

FELT OWL MATERIALS LIST:

diy needle felt owl materials list
  • Dense foam for felting on (3 inches thick or more works best!)
  • Medium gauge felting needles and/or a multi-needle felting tool (I used both.)
  • Small amounts of beige, orange, white, black and olive green wool roving or batting (or whatever wool colors you want to use for your owl - scraps work well!)
  • Cookie cutters for shaping: a 3 inch wide circle for the body, a 2 inch wide circle for the wings and chest, a 3/4 inch wide circle for the eyes and a 1 inch square for the beak

NEEDLE FELTING CRAFT TIPS:

If you don't have a big variety of cookie cutters, you can always freehand form the shapes in place and felt them as you go. Or, use varying different size cookie cutters according to what you already have. (You can also use a permanent marker to draw a circular outline on your foam pad to use as a guide for felting inside of for the owl body - this works well for all sorts of flat shapes for an on-the-spot, easy solution.) The cookie cutters just make it easier to keep the wool in a confined area as you shape it and helps save a little time. Just go for it and felt with whatever you have on hand!

NEEDLE FELT OWL INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Place the largest circle cookie cutter on your dense foam pad. Fill it with 3 to 4 crisscrossing layers of beige (or your choice of color) wool roving or batting. It will look like a fluffy hairball at first and that's okay. Start poking at it repeatedly with your felting needle or multi-needle tool as in my photo below. Felt up and down at a straight angle. And, it is okay to felt deeply hitting the foam beneath.

needle felt owl instructions using cookie cutters and wool roving for beginners

Continue using your felting needle, poking up and down, until your wool resembles the matted circle in the photo above. The fibers should be stuck together, but still a bit spongy to the touch. Once it is like this, you can remove it from the cookie cutter. (It may be stuck to the foam - just pry it up, no problem!) Then flip it over and felt the other side until your wool feels like a firm disc. If needed, flip back and forth a few times.

needle felt owl instructions using cookie cutters and wool roving for beginners

Once the felted disc is  firm to the touch and all fibers are matted well, use a single needle to gently felt any loose fibers around the edges forming a smooth circular shape.

2. For the chest area, use the slightly smaller circle cookie cutter. Lay it centered toward the bottom of the beige disc that you just felted. Again fill with a few crisscrossing layers of wool roving or batting. This time I used an olive green color.

needle felt owl instructions using cookie cutters and wool roving for beginners

As before, poke repeatedly, up and down at a straight angle to felt the bushy fibers in place. You won't need to flip it though since you are dealing with felting fibers onto the surface of your body disc. Keep felting until the fibers are firmly felted onto the body as in the photo below.

3. For the wings, use the same circle cookie cutter as you did for the chest area. Except you will only overlap a moon-shaped portion of the cutter to make each wing. Fill with a few layers of crisscrossing orange wool roving or batting just at the edge of your chest area on each side.

needle felt owl instructions using cookie cutters and wool roving for beginners

As before, poke repeatedly to mat the fibers onto the base and felt them into place.

4. For each eye, use very small circle cookie cutters and white wool roving. As before, layer the wool crisscrossing and felt into place. Put the eyeballs centered between the top edges of the wings.

For the beak, use the pointed corner of a square cookie cutter to form the triangular shape. I used orange wool roving and placed the beak centered just below the eyeballs.

For the black center dots on the eyeballs, pinch a small amount of wool roving and roll it in a ball between your finger tips. Then place it centered on the white and carefully use a single needle to felt into place.

5. As a finishing touch, I added a sprig of hair to the top of my little owl's head between the eyes. I used a long pinch of olive green wool roving, balled one end and felted it into place while leaving the other end long and wispy with fibers.

Handmade Happy Fall Y'all Weathered Wood Sign

Hand Painted "Happy Fall Y'all" Yard Sign

Create this Southern themed, hand painted sign on weathered wood!

happy fall yall weathered wood handmade yard sign for fall

Now that we officially live farther south, I can finally use the very grammatically incorrect word "Y'all" again and make this adorable sign inspired by something I saw on Pinterest. I couldn't have ever gotten away with this living in Wisconsin, but southern Missouri is just slightly still Midwestern with a lot of Southern tendencies so it fits quite perfectly here.

My dad and grandpa before him are all loggers on that side of the family so I am blessed with an abundance of different types of wood whenever I need them for crafts. My dad cut a bunch of sweet weathered wood planks for me to make yard signs and other handmade crafts with for this Fall and all the way into the (closer than you think!) Christmas craft season. This is my first attempt using the wood and I am thrilled with my new yard sign.

I sketched out the "Happy Fall Y'all" letters and basic pumpkin shape in white chalk. Then I freehand painted the design with an assortment of bright oranges, browns and a lime green. This was the fun part getting to experiment and test out my painting skills after a while of not holding a brush. I have a few other creative Autumn themed signs planned as well as a couple of Christmas signs if I can get around to making them.

chalk outlines on weathered wood for painting a handmade sign

If you are painting on weathered wood, chalk works well for outlining. I also took my yard broom and brushed each piece off thoroughly, but you don't need to get them super clean - the paint will go right over dusty spots with no problem. Using a lot of paint on your brush helps to get it into all the textured grooves. You won't have perfect edges, but that's the fun of using such pretty weathered wood in your crafts. Happy crafting!

Handmade Thanksgiving Burlap Wreath

"Give Thanks" Fall Themed Burlap Wreath

Upcycle your summer pool noodle into this Autumn decoration!

thanksgiving handmade burlap wreath decoration craft

I'm a little obsessed with all things Fall right now, especially wreaths. After I found out I could make a cheap wreath base (less than a few bucks!) from a pool noodle thanks to Pinterest, I have been experimenting right and left with these handmade decorations.

The "Give Thanks" themed wreath above, I actually made for a bulletin board at my church. I've also decorated bulletin boards at my daughter's school and really enjoy volunteering my time for such crafty things. After hanging the wreath on the board at church, my daughter helped me finish putting up little cutout pumpkins and leaves all around it for a great mommy-daughter activity. I feel it is also good to show her to use her talents and time wisely to bless others as often as possible. We all have different gifts to share with our family, church and community.

For the wreath above, you can find out how to make the hand sewn felt flowers here and how to make the burlap covered pool noodle base here. And the beautiful free printable "Give Thanks" verse from I Thessalonians 5:18 is compliments of Three Little Monkeys Studio. A big thanks for creating such a pretty piece for everyone to use! I think it really helped to put a pretty finishing touch on the bulletin board my daughter and I created.

Handmade Burlap and Felt Flower Fall Wreath

Fall is in the air! Can you smell it?

I'm a busy bee decorating for Fall with Felt & Burlap!

handmade burlap and felt flower fall wreath decor

I think we are finally thrown into full-blown Autumn weather here in southern Missouri, and I love it! 60 degree days and chilly nights - just fitting for sweat pants and hot tea. My husband and daughter have been thankfully patient with my frenzy to make Fall crafts these past couple of weeks while the weather has abruptly turned. It must have sparked something inside of me to create. As someone who enjoys fiber crafts so much, it seems like this time of year is perfect for working with felt, wool and other dense fabrics.

Today, I just wanted to share my first big Fall craft creation - a felt flower and burlap wreath. This one hangs by my door on the back porch. I have plans to make a few more for indoors and for gifts. The wreath base was made very inexpensively from a pool noodle. You can find that craft tutorial here. And, the felt flowers are another cheap project that are easy to make by the dozen. You can find that craft tutorial here. Put it all together, wrapped in some burlap and hot glued in place of course, and you have a pretty Fall wreath!

You'll be seeing at least a few more Fall crafts coming up in the next few weeks so please be sure to check back in or subscribe to receive my posts in your inbox.

Hoot! Hoot! I'm Cute!

Giant Felted Wool Ball Owl Craft for Autumn

dress up a wet felted wool ball with craft felt cutouts for this funky fall ornament

giant felt ball hoot own diy craft tutorial

In the past two weeks, the temperatures have been dropping little by little here in southern Missouri. There's also been a moisture in the air and briskness as you step outside. Sure signs that Fall is coming! Although I was thankful for summer here after a long snow-filled winter, I am more of a Fall weather kind of girl. I can respectably wear my sweat pants and long sleeve t-shirts. And, being a fiber crafter at heart, it also sparks me to dig my hands into all kinds of fibers from wool to fabrics to burlap. Fall has always been a magical time of year for me and instantly lifts my spirits.

If you are a subscriber to my little craft blog, then you hopefully got my Gigantic Felted Wool Ball craft tutorial in your inbox last week. That's what I used as a base for this cutie pie DIY owl ornament. So to get started, you'll need to click on over to those DIY instructions and make one or a few of those giant felted balls to turn into owls like the one above. I used orange wool roving for mine, but you can, of course, make a variety of owl colors. (Picking colors is part of the fun!)

MATERIALS (not including the felted ball base):

Craft felt sheets or scraps in white, black, dark brown and dark yellow
Hot glue gun with glue sticks
1/8 inch wide brown satin ribbon
Sharp scissors and pencil
Round cookie cutters: 2-1/2 inch wide for wings, 2 inch wide for body, 1-1/8 inch wide for outer eyes and 5/8 inch wide for center eyes

CRAFT TIPS:

You can use a compass for the circles listed above or freehand cut all the shapes - do what works best for you! I used the cookie cutters for convenience. Make your owl have a quirky personality, and if kids are involved, they'll especially like improvising the shapes and colors.

DIY FELTED BALL OWL INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Using the cookie cutters (or whatever you have on hand), cut the following shapes for your owl:

  • 2 white 1-1/8 inch circles for the outer eyes
  • 2 black 5/8 inch circles for the center eyes
  • 1 dark brown 2 inch wide circle for the body
  • 1 dark yellow 2-1/2 inch wide circle for the wings, then cut it in half
  • freehand cut 1 dark yellow triangle (about 1 inch wide) for the beak

giant felt wool ball owl craft tutorial materials

diy felt owl craft using a felted wool ball and felt craft sheet cutouts

2. Using hot glue, attach the shapes to the side of your giant felted wool ball. First place the dark brown body circle. Then the dark yellow triangle beak. Followed by the white outer and black center eye circles. Finally attach the dark yellow half circle wings last facing inward at the bottom outer edge of each white eye circle as seen in the photo. (I wedged my wings slightly under each eye corner.)

3. Cut two 8 inch lengths of brown ribbon. Tie one into a small bow and loop the other piece, knotting the end. First glue on the looped ribbon, knotted end next to the wool ball, centered above the eyes. Then attach the small bow at the base of the loop covering the knot. Trim bow ribbon ends at a pretty angle.

That's it! You're all done and have a cutie hootie in your hand! Hang it, gift it or throw it (after all, it is a ball). Whatever you do with it, I bet you'll want to make a few more. I already do. My little owl needs a buddy or two, therefore, you'll be seeing some other felt ball critter tutorials in the near future here on the blog so be sure to subscribe. I can't help but think this would also be a great Fall craft activity for a girl scout troupe, youth group or class party. It would be a hoot to see a bunch of little felt ball owls lined up (sorry, I couldn't resist). Happy crafting!

My Creative Mess

A Sneak Peak at My Crafty Workspace

Creativity can be very messy! What does yours look like?

the funky felters creative craft workspace

Over the past ten years, I have had a wide variety of places to create. The largest was a basement studio about the size of my current tiny home. Then, working as a Craft Editor, I had a nicely furnished loft space followed by a smaller, but well organized open office space. Since we moved back to my hometown, we've been renting a small (but adorable) little house. That has meant my craft workspace is really anywhere I can find to create. The photo above shows a varied pile of craft supplies for upcoming Autumn themed projects from a wreath to wall art to some pots for my (also tiny) back porch. That is my (also tiny) kitchen table.

I have lived in bigger places and smaller places, apartments, houses with fenced yards and the like. Through several moves and cities, both big and small, I have created everywhere I have gone, usually daily, if not weekly. It is not the space, it is truly the maker. I think that kind of applies to life as well.

Happy crafting!
